Tomorrow morning I leave for Lima, Peru to embark on a journey of a lifetime with students and faculty at the University of Michigan. While there we will be learning from and working alongside los bomberos (firefighters) and various community members in the areas surrounding Lima. I am humbled and overjoyed to have such an amazing opportunity.
Preparing for this trip has been quite the experience to say the least. I’ve taken countless trips to Walmart, Meijer, Shopko, Dunham’s, and Marshalls because I have forgot or thought of that one extra item that will be useful for this trip. I felt confident that I had everything I needed until my clumsy self slammed my finger in the door and I realized I was being overly confident to pack just one case of bandages.
I have no idea what to expect from this journey, but I am ready to be challenged and inspired by my team members and the people I encounter. Thank you to my family and friends for you amazing support and generosity. Hasta luego!
